About the University 🏫

ULACIT is a highly ranked bilingual university located in San Jose, which means that you can study programmes both in English and Spanish. This gives you a great opportunity to study in Costa Rica in a language you know while being able to learn one more language, which happens to be the second largest language in the world. All this while earning your degree at a university that has been ranked, for the past eight consecutive years, as the best private university in Costa Rica and the region.

You can study varies programmes and courses within fields such as Business Administration, Engineering, Information and Communication Technologies, Film and Animation, Art and Design, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences. All of the teaching strategies are project-based, with no traditional exams. Learning is founded on inquiry, research, problem-solving and service learning experiences, under the Teaching for Understanding (TfU) framework, developed by Harvard University’s Project Zero.

ULACIT offers additional services to insure that students have a unique global experience in Costa Rica. Services include trips to local institutions, site visits, guest speakers, transportation, housing, field trips throughout Costa Rica and various other services.

ULACIT has recent years spent a lot of effort in developing an international campus through partnerships and a great variety of English-taught programmes. This has resulted in the fact that today as many as 9% of the students are internationals of 26 different nationalities. This is the perfect environment to dig into local culture together with students from all over the world. Also, students enjoy socialising through the many different student clubs and organisations in a variety of interests.

About the city 🌇

San José, or "Chepe" as locals call the capital, is a hub of modern culture in Costa Rica. The city is known for its famous volcanoes and coffee plantations that make the city's coffee at local cafes world class.

In your free time, in the guaranteed sunny weather, you can enjoy the city's monuments and beautiful parks, and even visit the city's well-known beer brewery. Even if you live in a big city, you have the privilege of San José to easily go on the adventure in the nature of their mentioned rainforest.

San José's natural area is the place to be for the adventurous who want to create memories for life. Here you have the opportunity to soar through the jungle on their zip lines, river rafting with your new friends in the rivers or hop on a mountain bike, where you cycle past volcanoes, the bridges in the middle of nature and exotic sugar, cocoa and coffee bean farms.

Are you for long walks in the woods? Try a tour where you get to bathe under waterfalls and experience tastings of nature's freshest cocoa and coffee prepared by locals after a day of adrenaline-filled hiking and climbing in nature, where you finish by looking at exotic birds from the many swinging bridges in the rainforest.

Does the big city life with a big twist of beautiful natural scenery give you butterflies in the stomach along with imagining your life as an exotic adventurer? San José guarantees a special place in your heart and a one in a lifetime experience.

Housing Opportunities🏫

A popular choice for students studying for a semester at ULACIT is homestay. Students are placed with local host families in San Jose, Costa Rica. Typical, it's one student per family who then provides your own room, laundry, breakfast and dinner on the days you' have classes.

Admission Requirements for Fulltime Degrees

Here is a description of the most important information for your study abroad. Rememeber, single semester study abroad (exchange) have often lower entry requirements and different course catalogues. Contact your advisor to hear about stipends, entry requirements, tuitions fees, course descriptions and more.

What is the tuition and requirements for study abroad (exchange) students?

The study abroad (exchange student) programme will often have a different tuition fee and lower entry requirements. In addition, there might be a specific course catalog for study abroad exchange students. Book a call with a Uniclub advisor who will present you the requirements for single semester study abroad students, and how to navigate within the course catalog.

Additionally, you might be able to get exempt from taking a TOEFL or IELTS test as a study abroad (exchange) student. A Uniclub advisor will advise you on which universities have more flexbile English proficiency requirements.

What are the Semester Start Dates?

ULACIT uses a three-trimester system for both full-degree students and semester abroad students studying to receive credit towards their home degree system. The three-trimester system is equivalent in course load and duration to a semester system. Students can start their studies in January, May or September. Two trimesters are still equal to a full academic year.

What are the Entry Requirements?

To apply for courses and programmes at ULACIT, you must meet the general and specific entry requirements.


Documents required from students to apply to ULACIT are:

  • Official copies of secondary school transcripts showing courses taken throughout the year and grades received (English version of the document)
  • Award Certificates
  • Passport
  • Evidence of English proficiency if you are a non-native English-speaking student.

What are the English Requirements?

The English requirements to get admitted to ULACIT in San José can be sufficed in several ways. Below are the options for students to prove their English proficiency:


You will be able to provide evidence of your English language skills if you have:

  • completed an English language test such as IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL or Cambridge
  • completed some types of university (tertiary) or high-school (secondary) studies taught in English

What are the Tuition Fees?

Tuition fees for international students at ULACIT vary depending on the course you choose. The tuition fee at ULACIT ranges from 8.000 USD to 11.100 USD per year for international students.


The tuition fee for a study abroad semester at ULACIT for 15 credits which equals to 30 ECTS is approx. 4400 USD.
